From the Where2sing.com forum:

Kev, It's merely correct attribution of intellectual property to credit the dichotomy to Freud, assuming no one had thought of it earlier. This doesn't support his theories any more than acknowledging a similar debt to Aristotle implies anyone today or ever has used Aristotle as a therapy mode. There are a few of the modern factor analytic models which might bear on the issue we raised but the 'expulsive v retentive' characterisation seemed most apt when I was asked the question. I certainly have often felt like the butt of anal expulsion (pun intended) some nights when people are trashing the evening and I thought the description fit.

As for taking up the time of other singers, my locals are never stuck for singers. I once asked Garry & Di what the queue was like and they replied '56 ahead of you'. I have no problem listening to struggling mediocrity or even bad in limited quantities. I like doing trash myself. I still haven't got Eminem right (probably never will) but people tell they like it anyway and even request it. So I don't think I've spoiled anyone's evening with my trash version. But I contrast that with 'singers' belting it out so close to the mic that I had to plug my ears. I have enough industrial deafness already. That is inconsiderate rudeness.
