Hi Johnny B

Further to your Mic Technique comment.....SM58 stage mics for instance are designed to be held at pretty much right angles to your face with your lips approx 1- 6 inches away from the spherical metal grill.....and to reject other sound sources coming in from the sides when used in that fashion....The Closer one sings to an SM 58 mic the greater the bass response......If you already have a bassy voice then you risk sounding very muddy if you sing too close.

Cupping the mic concentrates ALL of that signal into one area of the mic....often making men sound as though they are in a 44 gallon drum of oil and many women will often sound very nasal and as though they are singing in a tunnel.....What singers should realise is that using a Mic in that fashion forces the operator to reduce Mic Volume..Mic Gain ...FX volume... and in an effort to balance things out...... and of course to prevent clipping and stage feedback.....you will sound like cr*p.....and I personally do NOT like to see many red lights flashing in my signal chain ......unless of course the singer in question is prepared to replace my blown speakers?

Some singers tend to alternate between holding the mic correctly and then pointing it up at the ceiling thereby often either creating a feedback loop...or a popping sound when they again change mic position (predominantly males)..What has really surprised me is the number of professional (semi) singers that often come to our show can be the worst offenders
