Venue Involvement: I think its great to see that venues are starting to take an active role in ensuring the success of their trade. I've been to two venues this week and have been impressed by how they are taking responsibility for ensuring bar turnover rather than relying on the entertainment to do all the work for them.

One Thursday night venue, Hippos on Harris, recently started, had a cracker of a night this week with 3 full tables (
10+ people each) all actively involved in singing and spending money across the bar. Sure, many were less than great, but they were getting involved to an extent that I have only seen at Kellys, Bristol Arms, Scruffy Murphy's. Complimenting the owners, I learnt that they had identified a suitable target market (University students) and had conducted leaflet drops and advertising (including the 'free pizza' with any drink purchase deal) for 3 weeksc prior. Going from a small core 'elite' audience of 5-10 to 50+ this week shows the value of advertising in the right places.

Secondly, Vic on the Park, I learnt of this one due to the venue advertising the start of karaoke on Saturday night on bright purple posters all the way up King St, plus, a big bright sign on the top of the pub hearlding the start. Now, I knew this venue well due to the music management company that has the contract for Mondays and Thursdays so I was keen to see how karaoke fared as the venue is great aucositically as it has been purpose-built for live music. In a word - great! Well hosted and targetting people after a way to let their hair down yet still sound good it is working really well. Proof? 70% of the audience started singing karaoke here for the first time. Coupled with a random draw and a host (Deny) who lifts the atmosphere and prevents it from ever falling flat. Oh, and the person who designed the nightly random draw was thinking intelligently as you have to spend it Monday-Thursday. An excellent way to encourage people to check out other nights of the week instead of getting a free ride if they get lucky. Trust me, I've seen too many venues make this mistake and although its great for regular karaoke goers it can't be good for the venue. I don't complain however as it is a good way to build a cheap wine cellar lol.
