Thoughts on recent Issues

Key change - karaoke gear can usually only change up or down 3 half notes (1.5 notes). If a singer is truly out of your key this will not be enough. You need to go up or down an entire octave. As an example, John Farnham's and Michael Jackson's songs are all exactly in the wrong key for me (tenor) whereas Whitney Houston (soprano) is fine because I can sing in the same key but an octave lower. For the Farnham/Jackson song I actually have to pitch it up 3 notches then do it an octave lower, which is always a hair-raising gamble. Key change has to be one of the most important concepts to learn which will make all the difference in the world.

Mic technique - the big thing not yet mentioned is distance to mic -ie- when singing loud compensate by holding mic further away and closer when singing soft. It sounds so simple but it is astonishing how many people just jam the mic right into their dentures throughout the whole song. This produces all sorts of undesirable effects (such as 'proximity' effect, clipping, distortion etc) let alone the piercing sound and overpowers the mix.

Broadcast - karaoke broadcast on Web or community radio would be great. Biggest issue is copyright. Would require APRA cooperation and some formal agreement. May not be a big problem if run not for profit.

Paradise - isn't Chatswood rumoured to be paradise on earth?
