From the Where2sing.com forum:

Dear David, I am sorry to hear that this has happened to your website. Although I haven’t been out to karaoke in quite a while (I’ve gotten married and settled down and haven’t had time lately) I did use your website quite a bit in the early days when you were starting up. I’m sure you’ve had plenty of suggestions about what you can do, but I had an idea I thought I’d share with you .. You have provided free advertising to countless establishments for a number of years. You have a large and loyal following which, regardless of pirates, cannot be undermined. How about contacting all the companies you’ve supported over the years and changing it so that you have an advertisers fee instead of a users fee? I know this may require a lot of work, but you already have the contacts and it might just be a viable solution. As unethical as it is, unfortunately some people just don’t care about ethics anymore, and want what they can get for free (and many people may also not be aware that the information they are using was unethically obtained). If the companies (pubs and bars) who benefit from your service by having free advertisements on your website were to pay a fair fee for the privledge, then you would be able to allow anyone to access the information, and it wouldn’t benefit pirates to do so because your information would be up-to-date and FREE. Hope this helps,

Many thanks for your kind words, and particularly for taking the time to think out a solution. Indeed, it would be great if many of the venues saw W2S as a paid advertising opportunity, but the name 'where2sing' (rather than 'where 2 find singers') is because venues think that singers should pay to find where they can sing karaoke for free. I also worry that such a change would put me at the mercy of venues, and that W2S might not be as impartial (read: equally unfair to everyone). But I should really put some thought into broadening the subscription base, and it is interesting that you think this would be a good way to go. Again, many thanks for your thoughts...
