Hi David, Just thought I'd drop you a quick email with some info you might find interesting and/or useful re. Lyn Kirk...... Untill about 8 months ago I lived in the Chatswood area and was a regular supporter of several karaoke venues in the area. I've since moved to country QLD which as far as karaoke is concerned, is the arse end of the world! I actually took lessons with Lyn for a short period of time around 2 years ago. At the time she was running her "studio" in Crows Nest. Essentially, her "studio" and "teaching techniques" were based around an extensive library of pirated karaoke discs (no suprise there hey?). Now to be fair, she may have had the originals elsewhere, but I never saw anything but copies. She also was in the practice of making copies of her discs for students, and actively encouraged her students to bring in blank discs and choose whichever ones they wanted copied. As for her teaching technique? Well she didn't do my voice any harm, but I reckon I could have got the same results from hiring a private karaoke room for an hour a week and just using it to practice.............. I would class her as one of the "those who can't do, teach" variety of teachers! Also, I seem to be permanantly stuck on her mailing list, which i'm pretty sure I never signed up for, and it does not appear to have any sort of unsubscribe feature. Now I'm not sure of the regulations on that sort of thing - I'd say you would know more than I, as you seem to be pretty computer savvy - but isn't she required to have some sort of unsubscribe link on that sort of thing???? Anyway, I hope you find the above info useful - feel free to use any of it in the newsletter or on the website should you wish to do so! Cheers,

REPLY from David
Many thanks for your email, and what you write is really extremely interesting. I'm sure that you could get off her mailing list by dropping her a line, and perhaps you have now done that. Her website also seemed to allude to her being able to show students how to get all the karaoke tracking they needed, and I'm unsurprised by what you found. It's particularly galling that someone like this may not just be burning the odd disc for herself, but may actually be distributing pirated karaoke tracks to a number of students. If you have any hard evidence, or know anyone who would be happy to obtain hard evidence, then Darryl at Capital Karaoke would always be very interested in hearing from you (capitalkaraoke.com.au). Also many thanks for saying that I may publicise your email - I'll do this in the AskDavid forum, though obviously I won't include your name.
