| From the Where2sing.com forum: On the subject of pirates - can you please tell me whether the people that download songs from the internet for free from peer to peer sites such as one called MiRc are legal. There is an operator at the bellevue and fiveways hotels in toowoomba queensland every friday night that openly admits that this is how she has acquired her 12000+ songlist and keeps it current and up to date.
It makes it difficult for operators that are paying $30+ per disc to compete with the prices she charges as her overheads are virtually non existant. REPLY from David
Indeed, all those peer to peer download networks are allowing people to pirate tracks (MP3, CDG, DVD etc), though the question is whether the network is responsible for his (Contributory Violation) or whether it is just the person who downloads the track.
On the face value of your information, the host at Toowoomba's Bellevue and Fiveways Hotels is flagrantly violating copyright, and indeed would pose an almost unbeatable competitor to any host with genuine discs/tracks. The difficult I face when considering an ability for anyone to 'name and shame' such pirates is in not knowing whether the accuser is accurate, mistaken, or would be just using such a 'name and shame' list to oust an honest competitor. Find me s way to solve that issue, and we will have a 'Name and Shame a Pirate' page on W2S.
