HI guy's
Been reading with interest on the rotation issue, and since i've been asked, i'll tell you how we do it at Chatty.
1st thing to remember is you will NEVER please all the people all the time, so dont worry about it, as long as the large majority are happy.
2nd is be consistent & transparent. People ain't stupid & most can count.
So this is how it goes:
First rotation starts to fill at around 7:30 for a 8:00 start (Usually the same regulars ie Roys got the tables all set out for me before I get there, Big Johns already on his 3rd Diet Coke). I look for a spot around the 9:30 mark at which to place a line under the last name to signify new round. Now you hosts should know what i'm talking about, theres always little lulls through the night when you might not get new singers for a while. The first one is where i usually call an end to the 1st round. That can be anywhere between 30 to 35 singers or approx 2 to 2.5 hours into the show. Second rotation starts with 3 to 5 singers from round 1, at which time we start to slip in new singers, 1 old 1 new, if the pile of newbies is bigger than normal we sometimes go 1 old 2 new.
Like Kev, our books clearly state, 'solo or duet', does'nt matter, it counts as 1 song for both party's, its even printed on the song request slips.
Be firm, stick to your routine & people will come to appreciate that if they look around and see the place is busy, they will realise they may not sing all there requests, but will trust that if they dont, its not that youve been unfair. After all its a numbers game, 1 Hour = 13 songs. 30 Singers means a bit over 2 hours before you sing next.
Music Addict is quite right when he says there has to be something more. I'm not even sure I would keep going back to place where I regularly get only 2 songs in 5 hours if there was'nt an atmosphere conduecive to make me want to stay.
Lastly, I show the same courtesy to people who have just walked into my show for the first time, as i do to those I have known for 11 years and I can say with total certainty that not 1 of my regulars would dream of asking me to 'Bump them up'. because of the respect we have for each other & the guidelines we have worked with.
