From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hi Everyone! James, I was very interested about your posting regarding singing with just a piano accompaniment. I have been lucky enough to do so on a few occassions. I also have the good fortune to sing a few numbers, at a monthly gig, with a three piece jazz band; guitar, drums and double bass. A violinist, ex Melbourne symphony, also pops in every couple of months or so. These gents are all session musicians who get together, for a minimal fee, for the pure pleasure of playing together. A suggestion was made to me, by the guitarist, to try a number I had sang with them before, in a different style with just him as my accompaniment. Scary though it was; as a soloist I only sing with backing tracks and midis, which although regimented, make a singer feel safe and secure; I took a deep breath and went for it. Pls keep in mind, this fellow is conservatorium trained, teaches there and has backed artists such as Diana Krall whilst I have had about a half dozen singing lessons over twenty years ago and no music theory training. I started by following his lead and then just let go. What an experience! To sing knowing that he was there for me, following my interptretation, his vast talent and experience encouraging me to totally explore my own creativity. Absolute pleasure, even better than an orgasm, lol! What started out as being quite daunting, became my ultimate singing experience. My advice to others is, if you have the opportunity to sing with a band, then just go for it! It's well worth the risk.
