lol. Hey Tania. Thank you for your kind words and yes, the deep and evil laugh of mine is much better in person. Undoubtedly, I shall get to one of those venues you've mentioned at some stage. Jason can educate me the best way to get to the CCC.
I'm not quite as far west as you seem to be and tend to venture to the other side of town for my social times but I get around. Back when I was a comp chaser, I'd often go all out to get somewhere but these days, if I can avoid the headache of travel, I will... I think first, I'll have to check out Kick On Karaoke's gig cos I promised Jase / Slater ages ago I would make it to one of his other venues, next comes Kev at Peakhurst whose gig I've also promised to check out and THEN, I'll get out your way so we can show off to each oth - uh, I mean... have FUN at karaoke!! lol

Indeed people can take comps too seriously. To me, a karaoke comp is a great chance to perform and show just what you're capable of, talent wise and possibly get money from as a result - in effect, being paid to do something you love. However, at no stage, have I considered that comp winning would immediately result in becoming a target of the papparazzi like some people seem to behave that it will. You know the ones, they think they have the most professional act on the planet and that the audience hasn't just turned up for a night out but to see THEM in particular. Then when they get the mic, they feel obliged to tell everyone how special that song is to them or dedicate it to 'all those lovers out there,' and that it was written by 'the great [so & so],' and that it is such 'a wonderful song,' etc. It's sad to the point of being tragic imho. It's KARAOKE at the pub/club, not your 6 month contractual evening performance at Caesar's Palace!! Take the mic, sing your song, THEN GET OFF so the next person can have their turn on stage too!! MORONS!! Grrr.....
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.... Sigh....... That's better! lmao. Yeah. Those people annoy me. Fair enough if someone requests you sing a song or you're out with your mates united in remembering someone close who's just died, you can say, 'This one's for so & so,' but anything beyond that's a joke, really.
I think comps are good practice for people pursuing a path that takes them to singing and performing in front of live audiences. The comps themselves should only be taken as seriously as the prize money and the quality of the show (including that of the judges and I don't care what their official qualifications are, so long as they are capable of judging fairly). The higher the stakes, the more seriously they should be taken. The opposite is just as true.
By all means, go in and have fun but if you seriously want to win, then make sure you deserve to when looking at the facts objectively. 'Did I give it my all? Did I give the audience the pleasure they were craving? What could have been improved on in my performance? Did someone else do their material better than I did mine?' If you can honestly feel that after answering those questions for yourself that you deserved to win but you don't take out the first prize, then either you need to re-evaluate your criteria or you can just be happy knowing that you did your level best as far as you were concerned. Other people's opinions don't make you any more or less deserving. We only perceive it to be the case. How you feel inside is what matters. If you felt good, then be happy you got to share that feeling with others and entertained them. If you felt bad, just try to improve to the point where you feel good and can share that experience I just mentioned.
