From the Where2sing.com forum:

A very interesting correspondence took place between a host and David over in the 'Ask David' forum and I thought it was worth discussing here. The host makes a very valid point in that as does he, I feel that charging hosts to make their gigs public to non subscribers was just on the other side of 'stretching the friendship'. This was until I read David's reply and while I don't think he put it as succinctly as he probably could have, I certainly understand and acknowledge his point. That is, the hosts will be thinking about the cost whereas David is thinking about the future of the site as a whole.

The probable consequence of allowing all subscribed hosts to make their gigs public (which seemed to be the desire of the host) is that more hosts would subscribe. While this in of itself may be seen as a positive, the consequence of that is that as more and more hosts subscribe, more gigs will become public to non subscribers. What we are left with is more of a dis-incentive for singers to subscribe.

I don't agree with David about the savings one makes by being a subscriber in saved phone calls to the venue/wasted trips et al. Some one has to be the first to find out that a gig is no longer running they usually do this with a phone call or a wasted trip, regardless of whether they subscribe or not. I subscribe because this is a resource that has been built over several years and it's a resource that costs David time and money (who knows what he pays for hosting/traffic bandwidth etc). Because I use and value this resource, I am willing to pay for it. I liken it to paying a bit extra rent in a share house in order to watch Foxtel when I feel like rather than just watching whatever the 'subscribers' want to.

I don't necessarily think that hosts should be charged what David is suggesting (and I think it's great that he is opening it up for comment before finalising it), but I certainly understand what consequences could behold if we did it the hosts way.

Thoughts everyone?
