From the Where2sing.com forum:

Kurt... I have run several Karaoke Competitions at Peakhurst Inn over the last 3 years and each one has been judged on Singing ability together with Presentation and Crowd response.
Everyone that competed was told how their performance would be judged prior to singing.
This criteria is the same format that Judges use in talent quests in shopping centres and also talent quests in Clubs where singers have to have sheet music to sing with live bands.
You may say yes right Kev what would you know your only a Karaoke Host.
Well after following my Daughters for many years around the talent quest circuit (both shopping centres and Clubs) I can certainly speak from the experience
I don't know of any singing competition that does not use other factors apart from just singing ability to judge a talent quest (or Karaoke quest).
If two singers have the same type of voice and are just as good vocally as one and other, then how you do separate them.
Let’s say one just stands there like shag on a rock but the other puts effort in to their singing gets dressed up and also gets the crowd behind them, then clearly you would judge the one with the best presentation and crowd response the winner.
Quite often however, Karaoke contestants are not told how they will be judged and Raffety Rules applies which is no good for anyone.
Congratulations not condemnation should go out to Leather - Baron for letting contestants know how they will be judged in advance.

Just a thought

Kind regards
Kev
