The reason that everyone is allowed to post as much information as they like, regardless of who they are, is so that Subscribers have as much information as possible.
Non-subscribers now see only the first 150 characters of the gig info, and all missing info and missing basic details (street, phone, etc) is now replaced with light grey 'XXXXX's (this has changed since both you and Jason subscribed). So now non-subscribers can see exactly how much extra information they will get when they do subscribe.
As you say, the value for hosts is in W2S delivering singers, and singers value W2S resources more when they have subscribed - so it's important that we have as many 'singer' subscribers as possible. Economics of singers -v- hosts suggests a US$1.99 per week 'public' price, and if this is also a price that will separate the professional hosts from the fly-by-nighters, then I think this is a 'plus' point.
