Karma Karaoke Kay... I felt a reply was warranted, even though I only occasionally post in this General Forum.

If others don't make the comments that I think would be useful, I'll comment further - but in the meantime, you'll find that it is obvious to all experienced business people here that you had almost no communciation with the venue, and that their actions were telling you loud and clear that they did not wish to continue to do business with you. As someone new to business, you shouldn't feel bad by not seeing this, but you should be aware that those with business experience would have understood this and can teach you this via these forums.

Your real fault was a common one for those new in business, in that you failed to identify the decision maker. Martin was Go Karaoke was not the decision maker. The Duty Manager was certainly not the decision maker, and more - he was sent as the messenger, and this alone should have alerted you. The Venue Manager also seems not to be the decision maker, because if he were he would have acted differently. Who is the decision maker there? I've no idea, but a great way to get this right next time is to go into a venue and ask 'May I ask who decides on your entertainment here?' rather than seek someone in a predetermined position.

The decision maker can be anyone from the CEO, his wife or duaghter down to the lady on the front desk who has been there a zillion years. When I started work at 16, I was told 'don't upset the tea lady or the front lodge porter - they run this place' (and that was Oxford University Press in the UK). I've since learned this to be true.
