Karaoke killed for bands: Noting ROVICS comment in the QLD forum and having just seen the same thing in NSW myself I thought I'd raise it as a topic. Why is karaoke being dropped for bands? My thoughts:

* The cover charge. With a $8 door charge you add exclusivety yet don't need to pull in as much over the bar [ takings are split with the venue ]
* The beat. Bands tend to have a higher beats-per-second that can progress up through the night thus adding more energy. I really think karaoke operators need to consider 'framing' the night with high bps dance music to lift the energy.
* Advertising. In the NSW case, it was advertised through local band media ( Drum, fasterlouder) and I suspect this helped pull a much bigger crowd despite the poor quality of the music [ its was honestly worse than listening to a night at the Bristol Arms ]. Bands can be good, I dropped a night listening to a Melbourne band on the assumption that this other venue would be good because they reason they killed the bands a year ago was that they weren't very good lol.
