From the Where2sing.com forum:

I read with Interest this mornings W2S news Email 'Karaoke got canned because it was too successful'...Its also interesting to note the number of Venues (particularly RSL and smaller Leagues Clubs) that want all the benefits that a successfull Karaoke can bring and indeed bands for that matter ....yet put seemingly unrealistic restrictions on sound levels ....basically rendering the entertainment ineffective and totally lacking in impact.

Went to a venue last Saturday where the host has spent a lot of money on quality equipment....has a good sound and a good show yet was on tenderhooks the whole night for fear of noise levels .and Indeed when yours truly got up to sing the automatic DB meter cut off activated and I was left on stage singing to myself. ( no loss I guess).LOL........This same host also told me of another of their Venues where the Karaoke operators are told to turn down or go home!.....Its not as though we are talking about 120db here but as little as 91 db (little more than a home stereo level). Likewise we have had the same restictions put on us at a couple of Venues....a 2K+ watt PA system is rendered quite ineffective at 90db and many venue managers dont understand that a PA system is not like a Home stereo system which will sound good at much lower SPL levels with the opposite being true for a PA setup......it becomes a little more complicated in maintaining a balanced quality sound than just turning down the 'Volume Knob'

One of our regulars ( fill in member for a number of bands around Brissie) was telling me of a Venue manager walking around with his trusty db meter and measuring the SPL at around 1 metre in front of the speakers and insisted that the band maintain their levels at around 91db.....near impossible!.... even more so for a band than Karaoke....I think Karaoke operators and Bands should set up a register of venues to avoid......:-)
