From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hear, hear Johnny B. So eloquently put … agree totally with your description of “karaoke” per se …

Agree that it is NOT a concert, it is NOT cabaret, it is NOT a talent show, it is NOT a talent quest (unless run as such), performers are generally not PROs, it is NOT some show you pay money for to sit and watch … it is fully participatory and interactive, it is you and I and everyone else “having fun, and having a go at singing”, just ordinary folks, amusing ourselves and entertaining others too.

Hence the universally used term …. “it’s only karaoke” when referring to an “ordinary singing performance” in a talent quest like Oz Idol … it’s NOT meant to be degrading … I think it is merely saying that the performance is not professional enough for that person to be making a living out of it nor is it good enough for others willing to part with their money to see that person perform !!

PS: I think the respect aspect has to be reciprocal though … the audience should also be respectful of the performers, and be polite about their remarks, and most importantly, be civil enough to keep their incessant chit-chatting to a respectable level when someone is singing. Most off-putting to anyone is, when in the middle of a song, somewhere in the room there erupted roaring laughter (perhaps in response to a joke being shared amongst some people, and hopefully not having a jibe at the performer) … if the audience cannot show that little bit of respect, then they should be sitting elsewhere, out of earshot of the karaoke performers …
