From the Where2sing.com forum:

Brumby: It is indeed problem when building up a gig, how to you encourage the crowd to join in? The most effective way is basically to get them excited and euthusiastic and then give them a book. Its amazing how many hosts don't take the time to simply wander around the room, talk with everyone, and hand out the books with a bit of encouraging banter. And then follow this up 5-10mins after the warmup songs or intro DJ music starts. Dead air doesn't get people interested, a cheesy 80's video clip with a high bpm factor or a high-energy rock song from capital with backing vocals will.

Personally, I'm not a fan of a host singing more than twice to kick-start the rotation, unless they are a great singer. Instead, I think it is better to throw on a video clip or rock/techno cd and wander around and talk to your audience. Having said that, *your* venue Management is your customer, not the walkin trade so if they want something different, engage with them and discover why. It could be the key between keeping a gig and starting over.
