From the Where2sing.com forum:

Hey Sammo...
I like the comp idea although, given your targets, hopefully, it doesn't exclude the odd amateur from entering does it? There's a few with talent out there after all.
Instead of a 5 song bracket to one singer or the same songs sung by each on the night, I'd suggest a list of songs in a particular genre one night with club advertising to say what the genre's are but not necessarily which night it will be on. As a patron, I'd prefer to know but from a business perspective, you don't want to deny the club an audience on R'n'B or Golden Oldies nights for example so better they just keep it as a surprise till the night. Maybe even keep it a surprise to the contestants just to raise the bar a little higher. They can have selected a song in each genre (from an approved list provided by the organisers) at the beginning of the comp, then on the night, the singers and audience both are told which genre is to be performed that night. That helps level the playing field a little too cos the entrants will have to be on top of their game from the get go. Then again, for a $250 entry fee, maybe that would only work on the hard core artists with confidence which would probably diminish the number of likely entrants but I could be wrong, so I thought I'd suggest it anyway.
