From the Where2sing.com forum:

Well... Have just gotten home from Baulkham Hills and I have to say, it's the most relaxed and enjoyable experience I've ever had at a comp. I sang Black by Pearl Jam (wearing my long black leather trenchcoat, black chinese collared shirt and black leather pants.) My second song, was of course, Sweet Transvestite from the Rocky Horror Soundtrack (in full outift - wig, corset, undies, garter, fishnets, heels and of course make-up...)

I felt that Sweet Transvestite was going to be a winner (has anybody seen my modesty? lol) so it came down to my other song... A few weeks ago, I had a tough decision to make: do I sing a song that I knew well, sang well and felt, but was an unknown quantity for a lot of people, or do I do a song that is more well known but that I might not be able to pull off as well? I knew that choosing Black may disadvantage me, but I went with it aiming to win people over with it. Unfortunately, I lost out because of song choice, and it was because it was a bit of an unknown quantity. Unfortunately only one person goes through to the national final...

Well done to Ruth who travelled all the way from Tuggerah to compete who sang the Bette Midler version of When A Man Loves A Woman and ACDC's Highway To Hell. For Ruth's second song, she started wearing a nun's outfit and slowly disrobed to reveal more a devilish attire...

I'd like to use this as a pointer to highlight that song choice is so important when competing... Know what the limitations are with the songs you've chosen as well as the strengths. Know how the song you've chosen allows you or prevents you from engaging with the audience etc.

I'm very happy with the performance I gave in the end; would I have chosen a different song had I known what I know know? Probably, but there's nothing like singing a grungy Pearl Jam song in leather at a comp in Baulkham Hills... :P
