From the Where2sing.com forum:

Message for all..This is my first comment on the forum but have read several times.Been involved on the scene for 18months and run 4 weekly gigs in Newcastle.Interested in a few comments read from recent forum particularly re: why run comps?Just finished a show 2nite where my wife was put to the ringers about the way the judging was done in a karaoke challenge the night before at another venue-which is a venue run by myself and and another girl. The critisism was from a friend who did not figure in the first 3 but apparantly geed on by others who thought she should have placed.Several points emerge from this:1) You can't please all of the people all of the time 2) Friends and business don't mix 3) Please girls if you must sing boy songs please nail them or at least upkey them.

In saying that I love running comps as people do have a natural competitive spirit and it is great for those who pay for the shows i.e.The venue owners and the drinkers. In my singing days prior to setting up my own business I didn't win even as close as a free drink.I feel now that on most occasions I sing pretty well and have taken lessons which resulted in an estedford last Saturday-I thought I did well but finished 3 points ahead of a lady that stood on a cat's tail and 8 behind a young guy who sang My Way out of key.The moral to the story to me and anyone feeling begrudged over comps is 'Get over youself'.There are lots of people who sing well and whatever happens on the day happens -just look at idol at the moment-one day a hero ande next a fool.Nice to meet you guys.
