From the Where2sing.com forum:

This 'out of key' thiing seems to come up often, and I wonder whether all judges do have the perfect pitch required to judge whether a singer is on key?

In normal karaoke I am not phased by someone who sings a little out of key yet has an truly interesting voice, but I would have thought that perfect, or near perfect, pitch would be a prerequisite for placing anywhere in a competition. And that everything else came second - as in, if someone is not singing on key, they would be pretty much disqualified, and all other marks for such as interpretation of the song, choreography etc would be worthless.

My view is based on perfect pitch being something that can be learned, or at least something achieved through practice, and thus those without it hardly qualify as competition material (bit like the golfer who has great stance, a great swing but cannot get the ball in the hole).

I'd go further - karaoke is primarily about singing a song. In the present oft-used points system, could a total non-singer gain a place in a comp through superb costume, fabulous moves, perfect interaction with the audience, spot-on song choice but with a total inability to hold a song?

So as long as the outcome of karaoke comps is based on singing, should there be a national code something like:
1. Can this bloke sing, as in sang the song in time, on key and in pitch?
No? Stop right there.
Yes? Move him forward to be judged on the secondary criteria.
