From the Where2sing.com forum:

Johhny B: thanks for alerting me to my web site going down. I've put it back up and found cheaper hosting for what is, after all, a free site. I'll be putting up a page on home recording. There is now software available for $A110 that allows you to create your own animated rock video. OK so it looks like MTV from 70s & no match for today's, but if you go to the Reallusion.com website & watch 'Reich & Roll' I think you'll be impressed. I was able to create my own horror movie & rock video in minutes with the demo, so was very impressed.

El Barto: I hope it's not me to whom you're referring as 'moved like Sta Claus'. I'm under strict doctors orders not to do sit ups and to drink wine & cider.

David: I raised the 'on-key' issue in the course of the SBS Karaoke Challenge. I spoke to several professional gig singers in attendance, who'd driven from across the state to attend, so I was very surprised at their choice of finalists, come of whom were note-challenged and wearing of funny hats. I doubt the judges were tone deaf. I rather suspect they had an agenda as to what was the 'real' karaoke. So I totally agree that 'near perfect pitch would be a prerequisite for placing anywhere in a competition' but not with 'accuracy of imitation of the original artist'. I have been convinced for decades that Elvis is slightly flat on Love me Tender as is the Sylistics lead on You Make me feel Brand New. Why imitate that? Many female karaoke singers do male songs and some of us may well prefer their version to the original. So imitation ought to be risky in comp's.

The underlying question seems to be 'Is competition karaoke really karaoke or is it a separate pastime more akin to talent quests and beauty pageants?'. This is a philosophy question like 'If a karaoke singer falls over dead in the woods, and there is no one around, is there a sound?' Tom (back on line)
