From the Where2sing.com forum:

Have been reading with interest this whole thing about comps and singing in key etc etc.

In my opinion, karaoke has never been and will never be just about singing; it's about being entertained. Sometimes that's being a great singer, sometimes it's about singing a great song and sometimes it's dressing up in drag out at Baulkham Hills... If a comp really wanted to do what David suggested it would be a dismal failure because in my opinion, what a comp's scoring criteria and therefore a judge's job, is to quantify the audience's enjoyment. This is a hit and miss affair due to the amount of variables, but a host's job and a comp's job is to keep the audience constantly entertained. That's why 'performance' gets scored on.

Should a contestant be diqualified because they sing out of key? The test is of course: Will the audience care? If it's really bad, the answer will be yes and the poor scoring in the vocal catagory will ensure that their placing overall represents the audience's feeling on the song. But if it's hardly noticeable or only happens a couple of times, it's likely that no one will care if they even notice. Hopefully, the score allocated will reflect, again, how the audience feels about the song. Can the judge misrepresent the audience? Sure. Can the jude have an alterior agender and completely disregard the objecive of the comp. Absolutely. Should a singer be viewed any differently than if they were deliverying the same song and performance in a loud busy gritty pub at 1am? In my, view, ideally not. There comes a point however when you have to differentiate the singer and not give 5 people 100% and that's where judge's have to score down or score up based on things which at first glance seems a little silly.

At the end of the day, if karaoke was just about singing, 10% of people who enter should even bother (myself included) and I don't think that would be to the benefit of the industry.
