From the Where2sing.com forum:

My 2 cents worth.
I employ many staff and do not particularly look for someone who can sing, in fact I find a lot, the hosts that are ex singers or can sing, a lot of the time are more interested in trying to showcase themselves rather than reading and entertaining the punters. I find punters come back to a show for the energy or wit of a host and his/her ability to produce a good sound not how good they themselves can sing. Some punters even find a host that sings well intimidating. I believe a great host is someone that can read a room, mix a good sound and help provide a fun night for the punters. My best hosts who can sing generally, if at all, will do a quirky song or something to entice punters to think “I can do that” and then buy drinks from the bar and “have a go”
Karaoke should be all about the punters, reading a crowd and providing a fun night.
I have had many a punter say to me that I have the best job. I have a drink, a smoke, people just want to know you , I play music and GET PAID FOR IT!! Reality is at the end of a show I am mentally drained trying to ensure all punters are treated equally, putting up with drunks, entertaining 18-80yo at the same time, keeping regulars happy, adjusting every singer, trying to make sure the bar is ticking and most important, looking like it is all a piece of cake and fun ……. And I have not sung a note.
