2 cents worth in your humble estimation maybe, but oh so true what you posted about hosts and putting on a show for the punters.
It is ALL about the punters.
Sadly, 90% of hosts out there do not have the savvy to see that (not the ones here though I might add - the ones here are privy to all these postings / discussions, so they know what makes a good host, and practice their craft accordingly).
Any song a host sings mean one song less for the punters!! if a host must sing, then sing a song or two at the start to kick things off like Bruce suggested - yes, choose something quirky, something popular, something familiar to all - so true about reading a crowd - try and find a middle of the road song or two that you think will go down well with the crowd (have a quick look through the requests submitted and read the common thread of musical choices), use the start as a singalong, to gather more interest, to get the punters participating right from the very outset of the show ...
I certainly agree that a host must not use the night to showcase his or her own singing prowess, and I agree with Bruce that it could be VERY intimidating to the punters ...
All I want to add to Bruce's post is this - singers with egos need not apply for hosting jobs .... well, not at my venue anyway!!
