From the Where2sing.com forum:

I have just spent the last hour and a half reading the posts both here and the Qld section as a friend recommended i take a look at this site. I have to say, some of the comments are rather nasty and derogatory to hosts/venues/comps etc. As a host for many years now i find the karaoke scene to be extremely fickle, with too many divas. Karaoke is meant to be fun for everyone, whether talented or not. Karaoke hosts cop a lot of flack from singers wanting to jump the queue (Generally the regulars are the worst) and i think i've heard every excuse in the book as to why i should let someone sing next. A good venue means lots of singers, which equates to longer waiting times, par for the course. Hosts are not always running 'their own show' but merely running the type of the show the management of the venue wants, which limits our ability to run it the way we would like to. In some cases this includes hosts being told to sing, or expected to sing. I have found that when i have a run of rather 'ordinary' singers, or heaps of slow songs on request, my bosses have requested that i sing in between to keep the 'mood' of the venue up and the bar sales ticking over. Singers do not understand this as they are generally not privvy to the pressures we as hosts are under from all sectors of the job. Don't get me wrong, I love my job and love my regular singers, many of whom have amazing talent, and many who don't, but it's no 'Bed of Roses' for the host. On the rotation issue, a good host will have it by order of first in best dressed and maintain that order throughout the whole night. This way people know when their turn is coming up and can time their smoke breaks according to the format. A good host will also not have long gaps between songs and keep the momentum happening. I generally announce the person's name and announce who will be immediately after them, this way they can dash out if they need to and be back in time to sing their song, it really does help with the 'gap' factor and having to chase singers. I hope this gives some insight into another host's perspective. Can't wait for the comments.......lol
