From the Where2sing.com forum:

Johnny B: Yes, these days each genre has a definite vocal style associated with it, be it country, pop or rock. I'm of course guilty of altering how I sing depending upon the genre of the song. I suspect its because these days, people aren't listening to the lyrics, rather to the sound-scape of the sound. Many commercial cd's have vocals mixed down with the 'wall of sound' taking centre stage. Hence, I'll try and match the 'sound-scape' of a song over clear dictation of the lyrics. A good example is Johnny Cash vs the theme song of 'Never Ending Story' - completely different and at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Bob Dylan never had an actual lisp, he blended that in to 'copy' the folk music style of the time and then stylised it even more.

However, I will always inject it with my vocal flavour rather than copy the original. Hence, its very recognisable as my version.

Venue Sound: I like a minimum of FX. Kelly's ( LeatherBaron's part time venue ), Rag 'n Famish, Hippos on Harris, Dave and others that I like simply add a splash of echo, sensible eq and then crank it up so the vocals ride over the music with both clearly audible and clean. I don't need GREAT sound, merely a relaxed singing experience without having to 'fight' the mix.
