From the Where2sing.com forum:

My first karaoke experience was in a chinese restaurant, an annual social event for my husband's hockey team. I was dragged up by one of the players, not willingly I might add, to partner him in 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers'. The team dragged him off of the stage leaving me to solo the duet. Horrified as I was, I did manage to get through it without having fried rice thrown at me and did receive quite a few compliments.

The following year I informed hubbie that he was the designated driver. This enabled me to partake in a little; (quite alot really), demon drink to help boost my confidence. I took all night, even with the help of my new best friend 'Al Cohol', to choose a song. After my poor-formance, I was again praised. I could not wait for the following year, which was basically a repeat of the one previous, although I gave mere 'Al Cohol' the flick and instead spent most of the evening getting to know a lady named 'Tia Maria', again only singing one song right at the end of the night.

The following day my hubbie said that he thought I had a good voice but if I had to get blotto to get up to sing that I would never get over my nerves. He was right, (the first and only time in our relationship)! I started to go regularly to a venue and after 6 months was approached by the KJ to work for them hosting. I did this for approx. 4 yrs.

I now do solo and duo work at clubs, pubs and restaurants with a bit of MCing at a wedding reception centre. Although I have no desire anymore to involve myself in karaoke work, I still go every week and love to participate as just one of the 'regulars'. I no longer hesitate to put in my song, (I practically race for the desk, a danger to anyone who may get in my path).

Do I still get nervous? Funnily enough, when working no, but at karaoke I can still get the shakes when the song and my performance of it are important to me. Trite as it may sound, karaoke changed my life for the better. It was the stepping stone to doing what I love most (and getting paid for it!) and has enabled me to meet a great many wonderful people, some of which, I am proud to say, have become my closest friends.
