Rovics...
Good choice of subject!
My first karaoke was actually at a Chinese restaurant where I was meeting a guy in the music biz to have a chat about promoting myself in the industry.
The English song list was limited. I used to sing Unchained Melody along with the Righteous Bros okay enough so chose that. BIG MISTAKE! The version was the high one and when I took it down the octave, the music biz guy told me to stay up there because he WANTED to hear me struggle. How unfair. Not a nice experience at all. The ridiculous amount of echo on the vocals was also off putting.
However, if we're talking pub / club type venue karaokes, that would technically have been my second karaoke experience which was in North Sydney at a place called Blueberry's where a business associate of my father's who was a karaoke singer and Elvis nut invited me.
I don't actually recall my song or the crowd reaction. How sad! It was probably an Elvis song. I recall my legs were shaking from nerves and my voice was a little quavery. I got into the grand final of the comp they were running though. I wasn't even aware of karaoke comps at that stage, so the announcement took me by surprise.
I only returned there for the grand final. I chose Bryan Adams' Please Forgive Me which remains my worst experience in karaoke or music in general EVER. I had never heard the guitar intro before and it totally threw me. I couldn't find the starting note nor any of the subsequent notes. I was so bad the audience was laughing at me throughout the entire song and one of the audience members came up to me facetiously at the end to slap me on the back and tell me, 'That was GREAT, man,' barely containing their laughter, which made me feel even worse.
It was only the next time I karaoked that I got hooked - at The Commercial Hotel in Parramatta when Carry On used to host it. A guy who was rehearsing in the same musical I was in was the assistant compere and invited me to come check it out.
My first song was 'Trouble' sung by Elvis Presley. The crowd got into it. I got into it and have been a raging karaoker ever since.
So there you have it! My first karaoke song ever, my first pub / club karaoke experience, my first comp song and my first enjoyable karaoke song at my first regular venue.
