Watergardens Hotel karaoke venue review on www.where2sing.com

A $12,000 karaoke competition

A $12,000 karaoke competition, heavily promoted, and in a Sports Bar of a prominent hotel. Is this going to be a serious night filled with comp chasers, or a fun and friendly night for the locals?

On my occasional night off, I like to go and check out other Karaoke gigs around town to see what other hosts are doing, what sort of crowd, etc., and sing a couple of songs.

This past Friday, 30th September, I thought I'd check out one of BPM's Competition venues - The Watergardens hotel in Taylors Lakes, Vic. After checking the W2S listing to check location and start time, my wife and I headed off so we could arrive just after the gig had started at the advertised time of 9pm.

The venue is easy to find as it is located on the corner of a shopping centre on a main road. Upon arriving and going to the upstairs entrance and discovering that this was the entrance for the Pokies room and the very large Bistro, we were directed around the corner and down to the sports bar which is located virtually underneath the Bistro.

At the entrance to the Sports Bar we were greeted by a couple of security staff, and then went in to discover a rather large room with the bar located in the middle, and a stage area and dance/mingling area on one side and a TAB type area on the other side - along with the usual banks of TVs etc.

Although the gig is listed on W2S as starting at 9pm, the time was 9:15pm and the host was just bringing in his gear. There was quite a large crowd of predominantly younger people, (18 - 30). While the host was setting up, we found a table and a couple of stools, went to the bar and were happy to find that the drink prices were normal, and the bar staff were both friendly and efficient.

The host had completed his setup and started playing Club Music about 9:45pm. The sound was good with a couple of sub woofers helping to create a big sound. There were no announcements about when the karaoke would start, so, at about 10:15pm, I went over to the host to ask what time the karaoke would start, and to check out a song book so I could put a song in. The host informed me that the karaoke would indeed be starting shortly, or as soon as he had a few singers. I chose a song out of the book, and went back to my wife to have some more chat and another beer.

At 10:45pm, the host announced that we would have the first karaoke bracket, and called up the first singer.

From where we were sitting, about half way across the room, When the karaoke track started and the singer began, the sound level seemed to drop off and did not quite have the same quality . . .(full story on where2sing.com)
