Menzies Hotel karaoke venue review on www.where2sing.com

Menzies Hotel karaoke

The buzz on the street, man, was that the Menzies' karaoke was starting again soon...

I ran into Broni at the Brighton Bar on Oxford Street, meaning that she extracted herself from underneath a man young enough to be her son, and told me excitedly that the Menzies was on again.

Directly opposite Wynyard Station, you walk in through the quite-grand front entrance, then immediately left down the stairs into the Sporters Bar - a huge and nicely decorated room with the bar running all down one side, pool tables at the far end, and with plenty of tables and chairs of varying heights.

The karaoke is well arranged with a large screen for the audience, good sound, good mixing, and enthusiastic and professional hosting. The songlist is comprehensive, but doesn't entirely (how do I put this politely?) represent the number of songs on offer; those 'in the know' (I was told by Dennis who was giving me a rundown on all the venues he dislikes) ignore these distributed songlists, and sneak a look at the 'real' songlist kept in the top of the KJ's disc box. Michael the KJ, who also sings superbly, enjoys a loyal following of some of Sydney's best singers, one of them being the multi-talented(!), and aforementioned, Broni.

Un-usually, the singer's monitor sits on the floor at your feet, and the extremely short mic leads taped to the floor force the long-sighted amongst us to sing cross-eyed, and the tallest amongst us to adopt a sort of Japanese-greeting (bowed) position. Word must have got back, because the leads have lengthened, albeit that the monitor position still forces the singer to adopt a remarkably humble pose.
