Covent Garden Hotel karaoke

There's not a single sign saying 'karaoke' on the outside of this central Sydney pub, but it's been running for 13 years, and is often people's introduction to pub karaoke in Sydney..

I've whiled away many a happy hour here, and should have reviewed this venue long ago. So here it is - but to do justice to the many characters and events which have coloured my visits, I need to spread this review over 2 weeks.
PART ONE:
You'll find the Covent Garden Hotel at the end of Chinatown, right across from Paddy's Markets, with plenty of tables and chairs outside, and a long bar and traditional high ceiling inside. The many windows and doors, and the small interior, help patrons spill outside, and visitors easily wander in one door and out another.

Being in such a prominent position, visitors manage to outnumber the regulars, saving everyone's sanity from the favourite songs of karaoke desperados like Jason B, Laurie the Singing Scotsman, Susie the Mrs Scotsman, Adriana, mad Dave, Baritone Bert and the like. I suppose I should admit to being amongst their band on far too many nights, and last Thursday was no exception.

I was tentatively heading to karaoke elswhere when a call from a regular visitor to this site advised me that the Menzies was closed, so I diverted my walk and met him at the Covent Garden. It was his first time there, and I wondered what he'd make of the small-pub and very Aussie atmosphere.

There's a huge column in the centre of the room which successfully blocks a veiw of the stage from a large portion of the pub, and it was here that we took up residence, peering around it at the good singers, and hiding from the, err, not so good singers such as Jason B. That his girlfriend also hides in some far corner of the pub whenever Jason sings is a telling fact - Jason sings, the crowd thins, the male toilets become a social centre, and all is as normal at the Covent Garden.
