REVIEW: Karaoke for oldies

EXCLUSIVE where2sing.com KARAOKE GIG REVIEW

As I'm on the Gold Coast on a Tuesday night, and Robina is really not that far away, I go in search of RQ's on Robina Parkway.

The roads in that part of the Gold Coast hinterland are long and fast (well they would be fast if not for some rediculous 60kph speed limits obviously designed for some renouned Queensland government revenue and little else), and it doesn't take long for me to start circling Robina town centre.

Although this is really just a shopping centre in the middle of wasteland, it does have an inner ring round and a sort of outer ring road, and is one of those places in which you can very easily lose your bearings. Having by now really lost my bearings, and finding that a lot of the streets have no road names, I give up and head towards the freeway. Finding the freeway, and therefore now able to properly position myself on the map, I head back and follow Robina Parkway - the street on which I'm expecting to find RQ's.

However, the road skirts the town, and I seem to be heading through areas of no population. Never mind, I'll give it a miss and head home, because that's where this road is headed anyway. But, just as I have totally given up an hope of civilisation, I come across a long shopping centre strip in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, and the sign at the top of the pole of signs says: RQ's. Oh joy!

RQ's is situated behind the petrol station on the corner, in what appears to be a roughly circular low building that houses a number of bars and a bottle shop. There's plenty of parking, and although I park in front of a bar that seems devoid of life, when I walk around the building and pass the bottle shop, I can hear karaoke from a doorway above which the sign says Basil's.

And so I enter Basil's bar, a pleasant room and nicely decorated, and with about thirty people. The karaoke is set up on my left, just in front of a low but large stage on which a gentleman is singing really well, and the patrons are seated in groups around the room. The serving bar is at the far side, and the girl who does serve me is extremely pleasant.

Looking around, I'd be one of the youngest here, which is to say that most would be in their sixties. It also has the feel of a senior-citizens get-together, the gentle and polite atmosphere, the friendly comments, and certainly the song choices. But the sound is relly good with a lady mixing it, and the male host doing the hosting.

The songbook is extensive, with about 11,000 songs - but including . . .(full story on where2sing.com)
