Losing my virginityThe first time I sang karaoke was in Japan. I was working there as an English teacher in 1999, and was terrified of the idea, however it's socially unacceptable to live there and not sing regularly, so one night I drank lots of shochu and, trembling with fear, gave it a go. I'm sure it was Madonna, and aptly enough, I'm sure that it was 'Like a Virgin'. After the first verse I was hooked and soon was even getting competitive with that machine that rates your rendition against all of the others performed that evening in bars across Japan.
